Confessions from Scripture: Controlling the Tongue

No unwholesome speech: I let no corrupt or unwholesome speech proceed out of my mouth, and but only what is good for the building up of others according to their needs, that it may be a blessing to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29

The power of the tongue: A man’s stomach is filled with the fruit of his mouth. With the harvest of his lips he is satisfied. Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:20, 21

Speaking to my mountains: Having faith in God I recognize that I’m able to speak to the mountains in my life and tell them what to do. By not doubting in my heart, and believing that what I says is happening; I shall have whatever I say. Mark 11:22-23

Speak evil of no one: I remind myself to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, to be gentle, showing all humility toward all men. Titus 3:2

A healing tongue: There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but by speaking with a tongue of the wise I bring healing. Proverbs 12:18

From the abundance of my heart: No good tree brings forth rotten fruit; nor does a rotten tree that brings forth good fruit. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people don’t gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. As a good man/women out of the good treasure of my heart I bring out that which is good for out of the abundance of my heart, my mouth speaks. Luke 6:43-45

Put away shameful speaking: Since I have come to know you, Lord Jesus, I have put all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of my mouth. Colossians 3:8

Pursuing  peace: As a follower of Christ I pursue things which make for peace, and things by which I can build others up. Romans 14:19

A gentle answer that turns away wrath: Father, through you I am able to give gentle answers that turns away wrath. Harsh word I will not use because they stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

Do not give what is holy to the dogs: I do not give that which is holy to dogs; neither do I throw my pearls (of wisdom) before the pigs, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear me to pieces. Matthew 7:6

Avoid foolish and ignorant questionings: I refuse to participate in foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing that they generate strife. As The Lord’s servant I must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient, in gentleness correcting those who are in opposition. 2 Timothy 2:23-25

Guard my tongue: As a follower of Christ I recognize that if I do not guard my tongue I would be deceiving myself and my devotion to Christ would be worthless. James 1:26

Speaking truth in love: By speaking truth in love, I grow up in all things into Christ, who is the head. Ephesians 4:15

A pure heart and graceful speech: Because I love purity of heart and speak gracefully (pleasingly) I will even have kings as my friends. Proverbs 22:11
