God is My Source!

Back in May 2008 the Lord began leading me to study what it means to live with God as my source. I have learned a lot during these last three years. Much of what I have learned has been summarized in the article Discover that God is your Source. At first I focused on seeking God as my source for provision and then later for guidance but now He has shown me that I can even seek him as my source on the most basic level: on how to live moment by moment. Just as we stay connected to God’s word through meditation, we also need to stay connected to our Lord Jesus Christ through the practice of abiding. He is our vital link to the life of God. He not some far off or a remote supernatural being who is not concerned with our needs and difficulties. He is very close to each one of us. He is living in us. He cares for us. Just like with guarding our hearts, meditating on the word of God also makes us fruitful. The writer of Psalm 1 speaks about rejecting the wisdom of the ungodly, avoiding the path of sinners and never taking up with those who are scoffers, but teaches that through delighting and mediating on the word of God night and day we will become prosperous and fruitful as a tree planted by the streams of water. It is important that we learn to guard what goes into our hearts. Fruit bearing, you see, starts on the inside and works it ways out through our actions and our manner of speaking. Jesus said in Luke 6:

For there is no good tree that brings forth rotten fruit; nor again a rotten tree that brings forth good fruit. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people don't gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out

So you may be asking, what kind of fruit is God looking for from my life? There are several kinds of fruit including:

• Our character – the traits that determine how we respond to the circumstances we encounter.
• Our good deeds – our selfless and conscientious actions that help our families, our friends and even strangers. The Apostle Peter tells us, “having good behavior among the nations, so in that which they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation,” 1 Peter 2:12.

Today we want to talk about fruit. You know, everybody likes fruit. While I was living in the Central American country of Belize I enjoyed eating all the tropical fruits; fruits such as mangoes, tangerines, papaya and pineapples.  Obviously, fruit is great gift that God has given to mankind, but what would our lives be like if there were no fruits? Receiving, everybody is interesting in receiving, especially those things that God has for his children. Yet, have you ever thought about how important is the manner in which we receive the blessings of God? Our attitudes can effect how much or how often we receive.
