Proof of God

A recent news article notes how many books focusing on Atheism are proliferating in the U.S. It is the atheist’s contention, of course, that God does not exist. Being rational and empirically based these individual use intellectual arguments to support their view while denying the testimony of thousands people over the centuries that who affirm that God does exist and the Bible is his word. The atheist says it all subjective and delusional, that these Christians suffer from a mental virus that prevents them from seeing the objective truth.

It seems that those who deny God are also in denial about events that are counter to Atheism that are taking place around the world. Look at Russia. For seventy years their leaders promoted atheism, yet now Christianity is thriving and even Russia’s president attends church regularly. Or what about China where atheism was endorsed and religious expression was heavily persecuted during the Cultural Revolution? The result was the creation of spiritual vacuum where now 10,000 Chinese a day become Christians. Or what about Albania, a nation that in 1967 declared itself the world’s first atheistic state? Since 1990 the government has allowed freedom of religious expression. Now Albania sends out its own missionaries to other countries (click here to read the story from Campus Crusade for Christ).

It is unfortunate that those who deny God or do not believe that he exists will not take the opportunity to try God out, to study his word and experience for themselves how faith in and obedience to God can change their lives. Of course we understand that some of them are rebelling against God and his ways. They are not interested in yielding to any deity or system that infringes on their desire to practice wrongdoing.

I think part of the reasons for the acceptance of Atheism’s denial of God existence comes from the weakness of the church. Jesus said in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” It is the failure of Christians to demonstrate the power of Christ in their lives that make it easy for those who deny God:

  • Some Christians are not exhibiting the righteousness of God in their lives
  • Many Christians are not demonstrating what a victorious faith can accomplish
  • Countless Christians ignore Christ command to love each other and allow strife and disagreements to destroy unity in the body of Christ.

I believe that the very proof that those who deny God are looking for ought to be found in the body of Christ; that we as members ought to be so full of the Holy Spirit, of God’s word and of faith, so committed to living a holy life and so sold out to fulfilling Christ command to demonstrate his love to the world that no one could deny that God is among us. So I encourage all Christians to make this their goal: let the world see the reality and the power of God in your lives.
