Will the World End in 2012?

You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the powers of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience;  Ephesians 2:1-2

But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by God. Which things also we speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things. Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can’t know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:12-14

Have you heard the warnings about the Mayan Apocalypse? That is some cataclysmic event to take place when the 5,125-year-long Mayan calendar comes to an end on December 21, 2012. There are a plethora of web sites, books and cable TV programs speculating about what could transpire. All of which should be taken with a  grain of salt. After all, there does not seem to be any modern group that maintains the practices and beliefs, such as human sacrifice, of the ancient Mayans. Why then should we give any credence to the idea that they has some inside track on when the world is to end?

Do you remember the years before the start of the new millennium in the year 2000? How many experts were worried about how computers and their programs where not able to handle the date once the year 2000 began and all the predictions put forth that there would be failures in the electrical, production, communications and banking systems which would lead to chaos and the break down of society? Yes, some people were scared and made preparations. But then midnight came on December 31, 1999 and nothing dramatic happened. All the prediction came to nothing. Yet, along the way a some of people profited off of the dire predictions from selling books and products.

The same is true with the Mayan Apocalypse. Those who make their living from producing content for books,TV and the Internet need a topic that will draw attention and sell products. But for us who know that God is our source do not have to worry about the end of civilization. It does not matter if society came to an end tomorrow or centuries from now. Our destination is with Christ in the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:1-4). It is guaranteed. So we do not need to worry or fret about what the world may fear. Rather, our job is to stay connected to Christ (John 15:4) do the assignments he has given us (John 12:26) and produce fruit that brings glory to God (Romans 7:4).

Remember that God is our source for overcoming the rumored fears about the future and destiny of mankind. Our future is safe and secure by our connection with God through Christ.

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21
